"The fresh and drastically different perspective offered in this book is a much better addition to the game than a lot of the official WotC stuff." -- The Chamber of Mazarbul "...keeps combat constantly moving, more interactive and less like a board game....4 out of 5 stars!" -- RPG.org "The content is, simply put, superb….The level of thinking and detail in the rules is truly smashing…credit has to be given to the designers for really picking out the details that can seriously improve the [4E] ruleset." -- GMS Magazine The Next Edition of D&D is 4th Edition, Enhanced Enhanced 4E Combat in Motion is a bold, new reinterpretation of the 4E roleplaying game, an expanded rules module that takes the basic game to a whole new level. Leaping ahead of the next, 5th Edition of the game, Combat in Motion introduces to 4E revolutionary concepts never before seen in table-top combat. Beautifully illustrated and extensively beta-tested, Combat in Motion is certain to become an essential part of your 4E experience. Once you own it, you’ll be sure to keep it at your gaming table alongside other essential rule books. Features Include 10 New Combat Actions All players and monsters joined in Enhanced 4E combat gain access to an expanded menu of general combat actions. With these, you can often take your move or standard actions even before your turn arrives. 4 New Terrain Effects Creatures and targets in Enhanced 4E don’t just have cover and concealment. They exploit the environment for every advantage. 2 New Movement Types Expanded rules for flight and vehicular combat create thrilling high-speed chases and terrifying aerial duels. 1 New Motion State Combat in Motion is all about movement. And now, for the first time in any table-top RPG, creatures and monsters can move uninterrupted, through multiple actions over multiple turns, chasing and racing one another across the battle-grid in smooth, seamless motion. Combat in Motion is a rules module written by a 4E GM for other 4E GMs and for players of 4E. It is designed, in part, to help GMs model within the 4E gaming system dramatic scenarios and classic confrontations that are difficult to impossible to represent in-game using the 4E core rules alone. The book also targets encounter length and alleviates player frustration with the rigid turn order (where most of the standard 4E game is spent waiting for one's turn to arrive). Combat in the world of Enhanced 4E has nary a dull moment. You never stop taking actions. No matter what's going on or who's under attack, it's always your turn.

The one thing I always missed in D&D combat situations is the drama of a cinematic battlefield - moving across the terrain while locked in combat, harrying an opponent with a flurry of blows, diving out of the way of a dragons breath, etc. With 4e being so tactically oriented I had hoped at first some of this would be brought into play, but very little was. With these new optional rules though, you can have all the dynamic drama that an epic combat situation should have. Bracing yourself as the enemy rips at your mind; taking advantage of having the high ground; backing away from a powerful attack to protect yourself and momentarily subjecting yourself to a harrying series of follow up blows until a break lands you the upper hand again to counter attack and press your advantage. In addition, combat order is fluid depending on who is being attacked, so players don't get to just sit around for 5 minutes waiting for their turn. Instead, they play an active role in their own defense, allowing them to mitigate damage in return for giving up some some tactical advantage next turn.

I'm also a fan of the rules for bending blasts (running on a diagonal instead of a standard block of squares in a grid) and precarious position. There are a lot of new rules involving motion as well that I may implement in the future. There's a lot here you can add to combat, I'd recommend adding these features slowly over time unless you have die hard rule junkies who want to dive in to all this. Overall, I'm really pleased to find some extra love and support for 4e combat options.

Combat in Motion Enhanced 4E Christopher F Ash 9781483900544 Books Reviews

I've been a DM for 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons (4E) for a while now, and while my group and I have a lot of fun playing, there are some parts of 4E's combat system that could use some revisions. That's where Combat in Motion comes in. It introduces several options for 4E combat, each optional, that a DM can choose to add to his/her game. While some options build on others, most can be introduced without dependencies on the others, so you can pick and choose the rules that fit best with your vision of the game. And these rules fit in with the existing 4E terminology, monster statistics, etc., so you won't need to alter your characters, NPCs, or monsters to get these options to work with your game.

In terms of production quality, the photos of miniatures in the book are top-notch. Each of the rules is explained from several different angles. I've seen some reviews that didn't care for this writing style, but if you're like me, and you didn't understand what was being communicated the first time, when you read it from another perspective, the "light bulb" will appear over your head, and you'll "get it." The step-by-step descriptions of how the options play out in combat are very helpful as well.

In summary, if you're looking to add a bit more realism or a more cinematic quality to your 4E combat, then I highly recommend this book. It's a shame that Wizards of the Coast is abandoning the 4E line, but I would love to see more support for the edition via 3rd party supplements such as Combat in Motion.
